Why we ❤️ it
Serving a refreshing drink with our meal, or to treat our visitors, is a big part of the Dominican culinary culture. Our jugo de limón is very easy and inexpensive, more-so if we happen to have a lime tree in our backyard.
So treat yourself to this very refreshing Dominican drink.
What is jugo de limón
The first thing you need to know if you're new to our cuisine, check out our article explaining the difference between lime and lemon. But in short, a limón is a lime in the Dominican Republic, so while we call this a limonada, it is actually a limeade.
In the Dominican Rep. the common lime is known as limones persas (Persian limes) and have thin skin and yield a good amount of juice.
Even simpler than Jugo de limón, it is not uncommon to be served a glass of water -- chilled or with ice -- with a wedge or slice of lemon. What we call "agua con limón."

Passionfruit juice (jugo de chinola).
Serving suggestions
Jugo con limón is great with our lunch (la comida) or with dinner. It pairs well with one of our Dominican sandwiches (try it with a Sandwich de jamón y queso).
Top tips
- Rinsing limes: For better food hygiene, rinse the limes and pat dry before squeezing.
- Ratio: There is no exact ratio for this recipe, you may find limes that are more sour than others, so you may need to dilute it more, and add the amount of sugar that you prefer.
What's in the recipe is just a suggestion that you'll need to adapt to your taste. - Storing: You can make it and keep in the fridge covered for a couple of hours. For maximum nutrition, it's best to serve citrus juices as fresh as possible.
- Sugar-free: For a sugar-free version, you can serve it as Agua con limón, in which case just add just a little bit of lime juice and a wedge or slice of lime to the water.
You can also substitute your preferred sweetener for sugar.
