One of the simplest Dominican sandwiches, Sandwich de jamón y queso, is a ham and cheese sandwich. It is a perfect snack, lunch, or dinner any day. It is a simple and quick recipe to prepare, and you can make it at home with the same flavor as your favorite "barra."

Why we ❤️ it

Rikitaki and Frikitaki are true wonders of urban cuisine, very filling and perfect after a long day of work or studying. Simple ingredients that, when combined, result in a flavor explosion in your mouth.

For those who grew up in the northern part of the country, and Santo Domingo, these Dominican Republic recipes are synonymous with their childhood or youth, taking them back to the street vendors with their carts outside the school, university, or iconic places like El Monumento in Santiago.

Sandwich or emparedado

Although we understand the word emparedado (the Spanish word) perfectly well, it is more common to say sandwich in the Dominican Rep. Or sanduche. 😉

Serving suggestions

They are traditionally served with a batida or fruit juice. Batida de lechosa, Batida de zapote and Batida de nispero are very popular. Other popular drinks with this sandwich are Morir soñando and Jugo de avena.

Top tips

  • Ham: York ham is typically used, but you can use turkey or chicken ham for a lighter option.
  • Cheese: Some commonly used cheeses are Cheddar, Danish, gouda, or other cheeses that melt well.
  • Vegetables: My favorite sandwich stand made it with onions and tomatoes. You can leave the onion out if you wish. Some people use green tomatoes, in which case it's good to grill them for a couple of minutes before filling.
  • Bread: Typically, this sandwich is made with sliced sandwich bread, but it can sometimes be found with Pan de agua or Pan sobao. If you have leftover Telera after Christmas, feel free to use it. Each has a different texture, but each with its own charm.

About this recipe

Any self-respecting Dominican has sat down to devour a flavorful ham and cheese sandwich accompanied by a delicious Dominican batida. Some stalls, carts, and "barras" are famous for their sandwiches, but it is rarer to make them at home.

What is your favorite version of this sandwich? Please tell me in the comments.

Buen provecho!
