Jugo de Chinola (Maracuya / Passion Fruit Juice)

En Español Recipe ↆ Video ↆ

Passion fruit-also known as chinola in the DR, and maracuya, parcha, or parchita in other Hispanic countries-is one of the most popular fruits for juice in our country. And in our family, a refreshing Jugo de Chinola is always our first choice for its fresh tropical flavor.

Why we ❤️ it

In the Dominican Republic, if you're looking to cool off and refuel on a hot day, order one of our fruit juices-and among them, passion fruit juice is definitely a favorite.

It's very easy to find in Dominican restaurants and eateries.

What is chinola / maracuya

Passiflora edulis is known as chinola in the Dominican Republic, and maracuyá, parcha, or parchita in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world. It is a vine-grown fruit with a refreshing, slightly tart, and mildly citrusy flavor.

It is one of our most popular fruits for making juices and certain desserts.

The Dominican Republic produces passion fruit for export, with the U.S., the EU, and Puerto Rico among its most important buyers.

Season

The passion fruit season in the Dominican Republic runs from spring through summer.

Nutrition

Passion fruit is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, and fiber, as well as small amounts of other micronutrients. Depending on the variety, passion fruit can contain up to 6.9 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams of pulp.

Serving suggestions

Passion fruit juice is perfect for a snack and as a refreshing drink on summer days. Try them with some Arepitas de yuca or Arepitas de maíz for an unforgettable snack.

You can pair it with one of our Dominican sandwiches (love it with a Dominican avocado sandwich!) or some Yaniqueques.

Top tips

  • How to pick passion fruit: The flavor and tartness of passion fruit vary greatly depending on the type you find and how ripe it is. Just like lime juice or any lemonade, a bit of tartness is necessary.
  • Sugar: Adding sugar is the traditional way, but you can leave it out if you prefer a healthier juice-though remember that it will be somewhat acidic.
  • Storage: To get the most out of its nutritional benefits, drink it fresh, but it can be stored in the fridge for one or two days.
  • Seeds: The seeds aren't necessarily pleasant to chew (some people don't like them), but they're removed when you strain the juice. You can, however, add a little pulp to make the juice more interesting.
  • Passion fruit slushie: You can blend it again with ice to make a slushie.

About our recipe

Whenever we go out to eat at any restaurant in the country, two out of three members of our family will order passion fruit juice. I'm not going to say who they are. 😉

I don't know any other ways to make passion fruit juice, so if your family makes it differently, be sure to let me know in the comments.

Salud!
