    Why we ❤️ it

Oatmeal is known and loved by people pretty much everywhere. Children and adults around the world eat it for breakfast. Although a steaming bowl of oatmeal is usually associated with winter, it doesn't mean it’s only consumed in colder climes.

Even under the tropical sun of the Dominican Republic, oats are used in the preparation of refreshing drinks that combine fruit juice and oats (like this Jugo de Avena [Oatmeal and Milk Drink]) as well as the more familiar hot breakfast cereal.

    Serving suggestions

You can serve jugo de avena with pan de agua for breakfast, and with arepa dulce or arepa salada as a snack.

As a side note, this is widely used in our country for breastfeeding moms to increase milk production (I can't say if it's an old wives' tale). This is a very tasty drink, so it doesn't do any harm to try.

    Top tips

    • I have tried versions of these without milk (substitute water for milk), or without lime, and the decidedly untraditional carrot one (add a piece of carrot when blending, can't say I liked it myself). Feel free to experiment.
    • Use an equivalent amount of sweetener of your choice for a lighter, sugar-free version.

    About our recipe

As in most of our dishes, each Dominican home has its own version. I have tried this oat drink made with or without milk, with lime, with orange juice (in a similar combination as Morir Soñando), and even with bitter oranges. Feel free to make it the way you are familiar with it.

I would love to hear how your family makes Jugo de Avena; tell us in the comments.

    Ingredients

    • 1 quart skim milk, [1 liter]
    • 1 cup rolled oats, (whole, not instant)
    • 1 cup sugar (white, granulated), (you might not use all of it)
    • 2 cups ice cubes, (optional)
    • Juice of 3 limes

    Instructions

    • Blending
Blending: Mix the milk and oats. Blend at high speed for 3 minutes. Sieve to get rid of solids (optional). Add sugar to taste.
    • Chilling
Chilling: Chill in the freezer (it has to be very cold, or it will curdle). If you need to store for a few hours, chill in the fridge instead of the freezer.
Remove from the freezer and add the ice, stir. Slowly pour the lime juice into the oatmeal mix stirring constantly.

      Serving: Serve immediately.
