Guayaba, the fruit and name for it has deep roots here, where Europeans first encountered this lovely fruit, and from our Taino ancestors they took the name by which we know it today. Learn how to make guava juice, our easy, refreshing and nutritious jugo de guayaba.

Why we ❤️ it
Alongside Jugo de cereza (Dominican cherry juice) and Jugo de chinola (passionfruit juice), this is a juice that is always welcome on a hot day.
Refreshing and with a uniquely tropical flavor, nothing refreshes more in a hot summer day.
What is guayaba?
Psidium guajava, known as guava or guava pear in English, or guayaba in the Dominican Republic is a tropical fruit native to the tropical regions of North America and the Caribbean, and was first encountered by Europeans in Hispaniola (⅔ of each is occupied by the Dominican Republic).
The name guayaba is of Taino (our indigenous people) origin.
Season
Guava in the Dominican Republic (guayaba criolla) has two harvest seasons: from April to May, and a larger yield season in September to October. [1]
Nutrition
Guava is rich in vitamin C and fiber, with small amounts of other micronutrients. Depending on ripeness and variety, it may contain up to 14.3 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams of fruit.

Serving suggestions
Jugo de guayaba is great as an afternoon snack, and as a refreshing drink in the summer days.
You can serve it with one of our Dominican sandwiches (try it with a Dominican avocado sandwich!) , some Arepa (it can be Arepa salada), or some Yaniqueques.
Top tips
- Picking guava: There are several varieties of guava, for this recipe the best are pink guavas, they have a thin skin, sweet, soft flesh and bright color. White guava (we call them "injertas" in the Dominican Republic, are more common and can be used, but the flavor is not as rich as pink guavas.
- Sugar: Adding sugar is traditional but you can leave it out for a healthier juice.
- Storing: For maximun nutrition, drink freshly made, but it can be stored for a day or two in the fridge.
- Seeds: The seeds are not dangerous (regardless of Dominican old wives tales) but they are very hard and inedible, so make sure none end in the juice.
- Guava slushy: You can blend again with ice for a more fun option.
- Adding lime: You can mix this juice with the juice of a couple of limes to add a bit of tartness that makes it quite interesting, but this is not a traditional choice.
About our recipe
Growing up, my mom had turned our backyard into a fruit garden, which served to complement the family's grocery budget. A small guava tree ("guayaba silvestre criolla [1]") grew behind our bathroom window, and the aroma of ripe guavas always filled our bathroom when they were in season.
I wish I had a bathroom that smelled of guava fruit.
Anyway, this is a simple recipe for a simple-yet-lovely drink. The only change from the original is that you can choose whether to add sugar or not, or how much.
