Why we ❤️ it

While Batida de guineo is not the most popular batida in the Dominican Republic (that title goes to Batida de lechosa) it is still a great pick for our collection of batidas recipes.

It is so naturally creamy and sweet that it can be made without adding sugar, and you won't waste those about-to-go-bad guineos.

Guineo?

This is how Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and several other Latino nations, call bananas in Spanish. A language curiosity that we've explored in the article linked.

Serving suggestions

Serve a batida de guineo on its own as a snack or a light dinner, or with any of our Dominican sandwiches as a full meal (a Derretido de queso sandwich or a Sandwich de jamón y queso go great with it).

Top tip

  • Lactose-free, vegan smoothies: You can make this with almond or oat milk for a vegan version, but be mindful the taste will not be identical to the dairy one.
  • Sugar-free: Bear in mind that Dominican bananas are VERY sweet, which is why I make this without sugar, the same can't be said of imported bananas in other regions, that are cut green and forced to ripen once arrived.

In that case, sugar or sweetener will probably be needed.
  • Best bananas: The best banana for this recipe are the ones that are "turning", when they start to get mushy and the skin is blackening.

If you have those, you can peel them, chop them and freeze them to have ready anytime you want a batido.

About this recipe

Guineo is a very popular fruit in our country, and we are the largest producer of organic bananas in the world (mostly for export). Bananas are available in the quintessential fruteros carts strewn about cities, and perfect as the portable, nature-wrapped snack.

But when it comes to batidas, there are several smoothies that are more popular, like lechosa (papaya), níspero (sapodilla), granadillo (giant granadilla), and zapote (mamey).

But this batida de guineo is right up there with those for me.

Which one is your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

Salud!
