Why we ❤️ it

Batidas (milkshakes) are some of our favorite drinks: nutritious, refreshing, delicious. The true quintessence of tropical drinks. And among Dominican batidas, batida de níspero is our favorite fruit batida.

But what's níspero?

What is níspero?

Níspero is one of the most popular Dominican fruits, with a dark velvety skin similar to kiwi, and a very sweet amber-colored meat, with several black seeds in the center.

In English, it's called chicle, naseberry, mispel, sapodilla, and sapote. Its scientific name is Manilkara sapota, and it's native to southern Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It is known in other Spanish countries as chico sapote, níspero, zapote and zapotillo.

Níspero is cultivated locally in the Dominican Republic, and it's primarily consumed in batidas de níspero.

Nispero benefits

Nísperos are very sweet, even by tropical fruit standards. They are rich in carbohydrates and a fairly decent source of vitamin C.

Top tips

  • Use almond milk to make a vegan or dairy-free option; it's a combination I really liked. I've heard from our readers (I haven't tried it) that coconut milk is excellent for this purpose too.

Serving suggestions

Nispero (sapodilla) milkshake is preferred as a snack or -accompanied by a sandwich- for lunch or dinner.

It's great to serve guests with Dominican treats like Pan de manteca, Coconetes, Mantecaditos cookies. This Nigerian chin chin recipe is an interesting choice, too.

About this recipe

Our recipe is very close to any other you may find around the country, as there is slight variations in how it's made. You can add less or more sugar, to taste, and use any other sweetener you like; just bear in mind that some sweeteners may change its flavor.

Salud!
