Hop on a guagua (bus) in the Dominican Republic, and five minutes later you'll be deep in conversation with your seatmate, who will almost certainly start it with the question: "¿De donde eres?"
The real question is "Where is your family from?", because it doesn't matter if you were born in Santiago or La Capital-what matters is that your family probably comes from somewhere else in the country.
If we ever run into each other out and about, I'll let you know right now that I'm a Montecristi native, born and raised-a nomadic Liniera.
And you, where are you from?

Spicy stewed goat is a dish from the northwest of the Dominican Republic, where it's said that the local goats feed on wild oregano, seasoned while they're still alive. Take it from a Montecristeña, this is the best goat you'll ever taste outside of La Línea.

You'll love a steaming bowl of our delicious black bean rice. It's the perfect side dish to go with goat meat. Anyone who's been to a countryside "vela" (wake) in Montecristi has surely gone back for seconds.

Let's not to get into a fight with people from the south, let it be known that goat is also a traditional dish in the southwest of the country-and if you serve it with this creamy chenchén, it is so much better.

This delicious okra salad is very easy to make and just as healthy. It's one of my favorite traditional salads, and it was often on the table at mami's house.

These irresistible green banana dish goes well with any kind of meat, and we used to eat them at home all the time because mami always grew them in the backyard.
