Summer, my frenemy

En Español

We from the tropics are not as excited about the arrival of summer as our friends from further north. Here are my ideas on how to survive the Dominican summer.

By Clara Gonzalez - Reviewed: Dec 13, 2023. Original: Jun, 28 2019

My favorite joke about Dominican weather is that we only have two seasons: summer and hell (verano e infierno).

It's a bit of an exaggeration.

Weather is the universal conversation topic used to break the ice. If you are sitting in a waiting room, forget about politics and religion, and you should never start with "…y el Licey es el mejor equipo de pelota dominicano" (many people are offended by the truth).

We always say this is the worst summer we have ever seen, and now, with climate change biting at our ankles, we are finally right.

One of the methods I use to try to survive the summer in this country "in the same path of the sun," as the poet would put it, is to try to cook dishes that require little cooking or, better yet, that can be done all in one pot.

These are my favorite summer recipes for not dying in summer.

If you have good ideas for surviving the summer, I'd love to hear them! Asking for a perimenopausal friend.

Un abrazo!
