About guava
Guava is a very popular fruit in our cuisine, so let's learn a bit more about it.
What's guava?
Guava (Psidium guajava), known as guayaba in Spanish, and also as lemon guava or apple guava in English, is a small fruit-bearing tree native to the Caribbean and parts of the tropical areas of continental America. It is extensively used in the local cuisine in these areas.
The word guava comes from the Spanish guayaba, which in turns is derived from the Taino (Arawak) word for this fruit [1]. Guayaba already grew in Hispaniola --the island ⅔ of which is occupied by the Dominican Republic -- in pre-colonial times.
Culinary uses
Guava is used mostly in desserts, as guava juice, as filling for cakes and sweet pastries, and sometimes savory ones, as well as popsicles, ice cream and many more concoctions.
Nutrition
Guava is rich in fiber, carbohydrates, and an excellent source of vitamin C [2].
