Why we ❤️ it

Whoever came up with the idea for a breakfast oatmeal drink must have been a culinary genius. Imagine oatmeal in a drink form. It's convenient: a warm, creamy drink full of the flavors of our most beloved spices. It warms the soul and satisfies the most voracious appetite.

Even those who dislike oatmeal porridge will give this oatmeal drink a second chance.

Avena Dominicana recipes

Aside from this drinkable hot oatmeal recipe - one of our favorite breakfast hot drinks - you can find on our blog our Avena Dominicana recipe (Dominican oatmeal porridge) and our lovely, refreshing Jugo de avena recipe (Iced oatmeal and lime drink).

Serving suggestions

Avena caliente is perfect for breakfast or dinner. It is typically served with Dominican bread like Pan de agua or Pan sobao, or some Dominican Galletas de manteca crackers.

You can serve it in one of those cups with a lid and drink it on your way to work when you are short of time.

For brunch or a larger breakfast meal, serve alongside Mangú con Los Tres Golpes, our beloved Dominican breakfast combination.

Top tips

  • Milk: For a thicker, richer drink, use evaporated milk. For a lighter drink, skim milk works very well.
  • Vegan and lactose-free: If you are lactose intolerant or vegan, I have enjoyed it with almond milk, and it worked well.
  • To sieve or not to sieve? That is the question. You'll lose some fiber if you sieve this drink, but not as much as you'd think since most will be blended in. It will only remove the large pieces left. Some like it like that. I'll leave it to you to decide.

About this recipe

There isn't many ways to make this drink differently, at least not the traditional version. Different homes may add or substitute spices.

If you have a favorite trick to make your avena, I'd love to hear in the comments.

Salud!
