Dominican hot dogs & no bun bacon hot dogs.
Dominican Hot Dog
These Dominican-style hot dogs are a shameless copy of a favorite of mine back in my Santo Domingo uni days. It is topped with cabbage, sweet relish, and potato chips. A very contrasty combination of flavors and textures. It's mild enough to become kids' favorite.
Bread-less bacon dogs
You don't need a bun to enjoy a good dog. In fact, this is my favorite one. Good quality crispy bacon-wrapped sausage topped with sweet and sour relish. This can be a great low-carb combo if you top it with Dijon mustard sauce instead of relish. You can also serve it with our lovely Mayo ketchup sauce, or with Wasakaka sauce.
"Mexican" hot dog and pan con aguacate hot dogs.
Chili hot dog
This is quite a spectacular combination. The bread soaks in all the juiciness and flavors from the chili, and it turns into a party in your mouth. You can use this Texas Roadhouse chili recipe to top it. You can also You can also use canned chilli, or better yet, try this recipe, or this one.
Avocado hot dog
If I needed to nominate one to be a Dominican hot dog, I would choose this one topped with avocado relish, not because it is something that exists already, but because this is like the love child of a hot dog and a Pan con aguacate. If you are feeling really adventurous, make it with Pan de Agua instead.
About this recipe
Hot dogs are very popular in the Dominican Republic, and each street cart has its own fans. For your hot dog party, you can arrange all the relishes as a buffet and let your guests pick whichever they prefer. Throw enough frías (frosty-cold beer), and you have a party that will be the talk of the town for the next grilling occasion.
On a curious note, while the most common term for hot dogs in Spanish is the literal translation perros calientes; hot dog in Dominican Spanish goes a different way. The Dominican word for hot dog is... "hot dog"!
