Dulce de arrayán, or guavaberry in syrup, is an uncommon dessert in our country. It is prepared with the fruit used to make Guavaberry, the traditional Christmas liqueur of San Pedro de Macorís and a legacy of the Cocolo community in the southeast of the country.

Why we ā¤ļø it
In the extensive collection of traditional Dominican dessert recipes on our blog, this is probably one of the least known. But if you are from San Pedro or a descendant of the Cocolo community in the country, you probably know it.
Having tasted and prepared it several times, it is definitely one of the high points in my decades of writing Dominican recipes.

What's arrayan?
Arrayán, or guavaberry, is the fruit of the plant with the scientific name Myrciaria floribunda. The guavaberry is not a common fruit, but it is harvested on a small scale in El Seybo and the southeast of the country.

Guavaberry fruit and jam.
How to serve
Dulce de arrayán is the first step in making Guavaberry liqueur, but it is also enjoyed as a dessert during the harvesting season.
It is the perfect sweet to end a delicious cocolo-inspired meal (such as Domplines) with a delicious Dominican coffee.
Top tips
- Storage: You can keep the Dulce de guavaberry refrigerated in a previously sterilized airtight jar for up to one month.
- Sugar: You can use brown sugar, but it alters the flavor and color a little bit.
- Regalo: Dulce de arrayán makes an excellent Christmas gift.
About this recipe
As with the Guavaberry recipe, I have to thank Mrs. Dunker-Lambert for sharing her recipe and her time with me, and her nephew Juan Dunker for getting me the fruit.
