Acerola Cocktail (Cóctel Limonada de Cereza Dominicana)

Acerola cocktail recipe.

En Español Recipe ↆ Video ↆ

Enjoy the summer with this refreshing, lovely, and smooth acerola cocktail. Though not a traditional Dominican cocktail, I love how all the ingredients in it are part of our cultural repertoire. Great use of cerezas dominicanas and a great drink to toast to a fun summer.

Why we ❤️ it

Acerola, or cereza dominicana is one of our favorite Dominican fruits. And making fruit juices, is one of our favorite ways to enjoy them. But personally, I love turning our jugo de cerezas into a cocktail, and sitting in the backyard refreshed by the summer breeze and shaded by palm trees.

You can enjoy this tropical goodness even if you have no backyard or palm trees to shade you.

What's acerola cocktail?

This is not a traditional Dominican recipe, though most Dominicans would enjoy it. It's an acerola juice limeade with white Dominican rum. It only has 4 ingredients and takes a few minutes to get ready.

Variations

My favorite way is to serve it as a frappe cocktail, so if you have a potent blender, this may be something to try, but it's also very good with just ice cubes.

Top tips

  • The acidity and sweetness of acerola juice can vary a lot, so this is the type of recipe in which I give you some directions, and you are free to mix and add more or less of anything until you like it. This goes for every ingredient in it.
  • You can substitute sugar for a sweetener, but be aware that some sweeteners don't work well with rum.
  • You can also use brown sugar for a deeper color and stronger flavors.

About this recipe

As I mentioned above, this is one of those recipes inspired by our creole taste, which uses traditional ingredients in untraditional ways. I'd love to hear if you try it and if you have any other ideas for people to modify this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups acerola (Barbados cherries), washed
  • ¼ cup sugar (white, granulated), or to taste
  • Juice of 4 limes
  • 2 cups Dominican white rum, [50 Centiliters]
  • Ice

Instructions

1. Blend

  • Adding water to the blender with acerola.
Combine acerola and 2 cups [50 Centiliters] of water in the blender, and blend until the pulp is slightly broken down, leaving the seeds as whole as possible.
Sieve with a medium-mesh sieve, pressing with a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids.

2. Mix

  • Add ¼ cup of sugar and stir to dissolve. Add the lime juice and check again for sweetness, adding more sugar to taste (it must be a bit too sweet because the rum will lower the sweetness again).
Add the rum and stir to combine.

3. Serve

  • Add the ice and either serve right away, or blend it to make it into a frappe.
