Avena caliente is a spiced, comforting, and nourishing oatmeal hot drink, typically served as breakfast or dinner. Practical, simple, quick to make, and inexpensive, it's one of two lovely drinkable oatmeal recipes on our blog and one of our favorite ways to enjoy oats. Try them!

– ½ cup rolled oats, [58 gr] – 4 cup water – ¼ teaspoon salt – 4 cup milk (whole or skim), (see tips) – 2 cinnamon sticks – 6 cloves – ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (freshly-grated) – 4 tablespoons brown sugar, (or more, to taste)


Step 1:

Combine water, milk, salt, and oats and mix (in a blender) until the oatmeal is nearly dissolved.

Step 2:

In a 3 quart [3 lt] pot mix with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly.

Step 3:

Once it breaks the boil, lower the heat and simmer until the volume has reduced to ¾ of the original.

Step 4:

Remove from the heat and stir in sugar to taste. Serve warm.
