I mentioned in another post that I have been sewing for a long time. In fact, since I have been living independently I have almost always had my own sewing machine (hand-me-downs from my mom at first). But it wasn’t until I moved to Punta Cana that I began to sew in earnest.
It was simply a matter of necessity. When I lived in the city I could get things by hopping in my car and wrestling traffic on the way to the shops. Here on short notice I have to make do without, or do it myself. It’s still an improvement over traffic madness.
I made this traveling set for Ilana, as a farewell gift before her yearly trip to Europe. I still like it better than anything I could have bought in a store.
The set, consisting of a traveling wallet, a sleeping mask, a tea pouch and pen, was made with half a yard of London Cats Three O’Clock Tea (I used only half of it, so only a fat quarter is required). For the lining I used Aquarius Medallions Lime and Aquarius Paisley Aqua, all discontinued.
The wallet has a passport pocket, a pocket for ID with clear window, slot for tickets, slot for notes, two credit card slots and a coin pocket, as well as a pen holder.
As interfacing I used firm stabilizer which makes the wallet very stiff (as a wallet should be). I finished with an embroidered satin edge in coordinating color.
For the tea pouch (which can also be used as a keyring), and the sleeping mask I used fusible fleece as interfacing.
The wallet closes with a magnetic snap, and the tea pouch with a snap button. Both were covered with Heat N Bond Iron on Vinyl to make them resistant to stains and water.
For Maia, my friend’s little niece, I made a bag for carrying coloring books and pencils. Great for entertaining kids on the go.
This is a great way to entertain a toddler on trips, and makes for a handy gift for young travelers.
A one of a kind gift, made specially for somebody is worth more than most things you can buy at the store, and it’s probably cheaper too.
Which reminds me: I think I am going to make one of these for Nadia too.
