“Summer is upon us” I hear everywhere, I snicker a bit. For us inhabitants of the tropics, this makes no difference. Summer is always upon us, the only difference it makes is that our brain cells fry at a higher temperature for a couple of months.
Two years ago, when we moved here, Nadia’s farmor (dad’s mom, in Danish) came to visit us. Since we couldn’t be with her for her birthday I decided to give her a belated present, a summery beach tote.
For this tote I used a fat quarter I got as part of a lot I bought on eBay, no idea what print that is (the turquoise one). The yellow one with the starfish was bought elsewhere.
I also made a simple wallet for her to carry some change (they were staying at a hotel and didn’t need to carry money around) and cards. Both have her name embroidered on them.
I added a small chain for her keys (then I remembered hotels don’t use keys anymore). Oh well.
The front pockets closes with two velcro tabs. and the bag closes with a magnetic button. As always, I used fusible fleece as interfacing. I lined the tote with blue satin.
It’s the perfect bag to go to the beach: happy, tropical colors that go well with blinding sun and lazy, rum-spiced days.
I may envy people living further north during the hottest months of the year, but truth is, I am an island girl, I like the tropics. So please don’t get mad at me for snickering at your summer, I won’t get mad if you mock me for complaining about the “cold” in our “winter”.
