Hi, I am new here but I wanted to say the site is great. I was living in San Pedro for a year with my husband, but am back here in Michigan waiting for his visa. I am Mexican so while I was living in SPM I went through a ton of hot sauce. My family is from Northern Mexico so we cook with alot of corn masa. Our tamales are made with masa de maiz, but the pasteles are similar but made from masa de platanos. Similar to the tamales in Oaxaca! But I am a corn lover a heart. There is a lot of food I like in the DR for example ensalada rusa, but the lady I lived with puts acete verde and a bit of vinager in it. It adds a great taste of zip!!!! But sorry to say there are many dominican staples that I couldn't get used to. Like bollo......I know I know los peloteros dice "Bollo makes them strong", but I am sorry it tastes like raw soggy flour. And boiled platanos..no thank you! But tostones.....I love!!!!! Like I said my family doesn't cook with platanos, we are corn people! Sometimes communicating was difficult because I am mexican so I say tamales and they say pasteles!! Same things different words!! But I am happy to say I infused my mexican cooking into my families style of cooking. Luckily I was living with a family that liked spicy food! So I am here now and I know I will miss that dominican cooking......but I have the website to help bring that into my home!!!
