Monkey Bread

I am 1/2 Dominican(Mom) and 1/2 African American(Dad). This recipe comes from my Grandmother on my Dad's side and is the best bread I have had. It is perfect for holidays. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup vegetable shortening
1 tsp. salt
1 cup milk,scalded
1 cake of compressed yeast, or 1 packet of yeast(I use the brand Fleischman)
1/4 cup lukewarm water
2 eggs, beaten
4 cups sifted all purpose flour
1/4 cups melted butter

Add sugar, shortening, and salt to hot milk. Stir until shortening melts and sugar dissolves. Cool to lukewarm. Crumble yeast into warm water. Let stand 5 minutes. Combine milk and yeast mixture. Add the beaten eggs and half the flour. Beat well. Add remaining flour. Turn dough onto lightly floured board. Knead until smooth. Place dough in well greased bowl. Cover, let rise, 1-1/2 hours or until double in bulk. Roll dough to 1/2 inch in thickness. Cut into pieces size of small walnut. Roll into balls. Roll each balls in melted butter. Place in 10 inch tube pan. Cover let rise until double in bulk. Heat oven to 350 degrees bake for 20 minutes. Turn out onto serving plate. Serve hot. DO NOT CUT,pull apart. Enjoy!
