Culinary adventures

50% of the reason I like travelling is because of the chance of trying new things. Food is an important reflection of people's cultures, it doesn't make sense to visit a foreign country and sticking to the 'tried and tested'. However, with notable exceptions, there are things I am not willing to try: meat, for example (the exception being jamón serrano, which I tried in Spain and confessed to in the diaries of our 2006 Euro Tour).

How adventurous are you? What would you try and what not in a foreign land?

I totally agree. I'm sick to death of whinging tourists, who spend all that money on a holiday just to moan about how much they miss the food at home. Alot of brits do it, alot of them are in my family! I remember my first trip to DR with my sister. We moaned so much about the food but then we were staying in an all inclusive. We didn't really venture off the resort much until the last few days and then we experienced real dominican food we were so relieved and glad to eat something decent and wholesome that actually had some flavour!
I would like to think that I'd try everything but there are certain parts of the animal body that I wouldn't put anywhere near my mouth!

Try all you can.

I agree also. Personally I am willing to try most anything within reason. I too am not too fond of when someone complains about the choice of food. We all have to start somewhere though. I recently went to a local Colombian resturaunt that my family eats at and there was a non hispanic person there who was trying the food for the first time. I aplaud her. She did complain about certain things but after she tried it, she enjoyed her food. That is all you can ask for. Try it. You never know. My wife has a Mexican background and is used to eating that food. However fter 7 years of marrige, she really enjoys things like arroz con gandules and mofongo and mangu and tostones. She actually asks me to cook them for me and has learned to do than as well. I recommend trying all types of food as it can help us all become familiar with other cultures which is always a good thing. Just my two cents.

I would try anything at least once. You never know what you might be missing. What may be a complete abomination in my culture is probably a delicassy somewhere else. Who am I to insult another culture? I try it once, If I don't like it at least I KNOW I don't.
