Desserts - Beverages

A good Dominican meal will not be complete without a dulcito (a sweet) right before 'el cafecito' that dots the i in our meals. A tropical country and a great variety of fruits make for Dominicans' taste for juices and shakes.

Recipe Trigo con leche (Bulgur with milk)

This is yet another case in which a dessert dish is used also as a breakfast dish, or a light dinner dish. It all depends on how much sugar you add to the concoction. Add less sugar for main breakfast dish, more sugar to serve as dessert.

Time: 15 Mins
Difficulty: Easy
Serve: 4 people

Before starting to cook: Soak the bulgur and rice in the water for at least two hours, preferably overnight.

Ingredients:
  • 4 cups of evaporated milk
  • 4 cups of water
  • 2 cups of bulgur
  • 1/4 cup of rice
  • 4 Cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon of cloves
  • A pinch of ground nutmeg
  • Sugar (to taste)
  • A pinch of salt

Preparation:
  1. Mix all the ingredients (except the milk), put the mixture in a pot and boil at medium heat until the rice is very soft, adjust water if necessary. Add the milk and stir regularly to avoid sticking. When it acquires pudding-like consistency turn off the heat. Serve hot if you are using it as main dish or chill to serve as dessert.
