Poor man's food

I have always told my friends that I am a cheap date because I love "poor man's food" I am mexican so my favorite meal is simply. mi frijoles, arroz mexicana, y tortillas! When I was young I lived with my abuelita for a school year and I could walk home for lunch (AHHH the good old days!). Every morning she would ask me what I wanted for lunch and every single day it was the same thing. ARROZ, FRIJOLES, Y TORTILLAS!!!!! And to this day still when I go to a mexican restaurant that is what I order. But every now and again if they serve them I get a torta (soy mexicana and to us mexicanos una torta is a sandwhich).

But when I was living in Dominicana when we would run out of arroz in the house we would have Bollo (sorry if it is spelled wrong). I would consider that the real poor man's food. Just some boiled flour. I thought it was the most disgusting dish ever. But everyone in the house said the peloteros love it and it makes them stronger. And if we had a special treat we would have it with a red cheesey sauce. The sauce didn't make it any better. Nobody didn't understand why I didn't like Bollo because tortillas are made from flour. But tortillas are cooked. Bollo is boiled balls of dough so they taste like raw dough.

So sorry to all you dominicanos that love bollo. That was one dish that never aquired the taste for.

Oh, you mean this: Bollitos de harina (boiled flour rolls)

I am not really fond of it, but I can understand why someone would hate them.

Add some ketchup to it and that's the kind of meal that you'd need to torture me to confess to enjoy.

Not that I do, you know... I mean, it's just hypothetically delicious, but so low-class

You know, my dad is one of those that would eat anything under the sun, provided it is cooked properly.....yet refuses to ever eat rice and fried egg.

Fried egg and rice (no ketchup, only salt and pepper) is one of my top 5 comfort foods, along with boiled potatoes and hard boiled eggs (with salt, pepper, butter/mayo/olive oil).
