When I first met my husband I was entirely open to learning about the Dominican culture. I started trying to make rice and beans right away and at first it was a disaster! LOL But after 4 yrs. I have gotten pretty good. I won't call myself great because there are so many other recipes I need to perfect. But I can make a mean pollo guisado(my favorite), mangu, moro de habichuelas, gandules, pernil, ect. It took me 3 yrs to get the arroz blanco perfected lol and my mother in law taught me how to make habichuleas. But sometimes I need a break from the Dominican food and my hubby and I argue about it sometimes! It's like he can't go a day without rice and beans! Sometimes I just need a nice London broil with potatoes or a good meatloaf. He loves the other food but sometimes whines that I need to go back to making his food a majority of the week!

We're moving to Montecristi within the next few years, so I suppose I will have to get used to eating the food everyday, which I don't really mind. But I will definately be sneaking in some good old American food from time to time!

My husband and I have been married for 6 years and it's had alot of ups and downs dealing with our races. His mother wasn't to fond of me because I'm black, she made it clear to me even after we were married saying "I want him with a dominican, puerto rican or white girl, not black".
All of his dominican guy friends think it's great that he married outside his race and welcome me with open arms but thier wives, no. The black guys will not dare say or look at him funny, but for me I get comments and dirty stares. The black girls who I have met while here in NC have had a problem with me being married outside my race. Needless to say all my girlfriends are interracially married and understand what I go through.
My husband though has been thrilled about how much I soak up everything dealing with his culture. He always jokes and says that I'm really Dominican!
I've learned over the years to ignore people and just laugh at them because life is too short. I know they wish they were me and living life to the fullest. We have a beautiful baby girl and a good marriage and I wouldn't change that for nobody.
Don't let ignorant people bother you. I don't know about your husband, but a majority of Domincans are a mix of three races; African, Spanish and Taino (the indegenious people of the island). Some Dominicans don't want to admit they have any African in them because it has to do with their intolerance for their neighboring Haitians. Also, when Trujillo was in power he encouraged his people to lighten their color because of his hate for the Haitians (although he himself had Haitian in him!) So, this may be where your husband's mother gets her point of view. It is just engraved into some families, this way of thinking.
My husband's mother is Taino and Spanish. His father is Spanish and African and French (Haitian). I am German, Irish, Italian, Polish and English. I am very proud of my son having so many cultures in him, and you should be too!!!!

I have to confess that I don't miss it as much as I should. I left very young and have spent most of my life elsewhere.
