Malanga?

I was going to try to make a sancocho next week, but what is malanga??? I did a search but there are only results in the Spanish forum (and I don't speak Spanish :( ...yet). Also: Where can I find goat meat? Do I need to go to a specialty store/ butcher?
Thanks everyone!

Thanks to Aunt Jane, I learned that this is the name usually used in English for 'yautia'.

Thank you so much Aunt Ilana. Unfortunately I don't know what that is either... Could there even be another name for it? Or maybe you could describe what it looks like?
Thank you so much!

PS: I just loooove your site! I couldn't cook at all (!!!) before, now my Dominican boyfriend loves to eat my (your) food! You definitely saved me from a disaster when we moved in together!

A bit of googling finds this fantastic article about it. Also check this picture. Hope that clears it... at least a bit.

Malanga

Malanga is a produce that can be peeled and cooked. It is grown in Homestead South Florida. it is good with mojita, (garlic sauce). It is not available in California, Texas. or Arizona. It is good in soups and other dishes.

I think the closest relative is "taro"... but remember, a Sancocho is a pot-a-feu, so dont concern yourself with getting every ingredient in, as long as you have a combo of tubers, meats and seasoning... its all good.. especially on a rainy day!

Malanga

I get my Malanga from the Farmer's market. You could also try the flea market.
