Desserts - Beverages

A good Dominican meal will not be complete without a dulcito (a sweet) right before 'el cafecito' that dots the i in our meals. A tropical country and a great variety of fruits make for Dominicans' taste for juices and shakes.

Recipe Tizana de limón y menta (Lime and mint infusion)

Dominicans are big fans of herbal medicine, which can be good or bad, depending on a number of things. Of the least controversial of these remedies tizanas are the most popular. Infusions are very effective as relief to a bad cold, this one particularly so.

Before starting to cook:
Wash the leaves.

Time:
15 Mins
Difficulty: Easy
Serve: 1 person (1 cup)

Ingredients:
  • 1 lime or lemon
  • 2 tablespoons of honey (or sugar)
  • 8 leaves from a lime or lemon tree
  • 6 mint leaves
  • 4 cups of water

Preparation:
  1. In a deep pot (preferably stainless steel) put the water on the fire until it breaks a boil. Add the lime leaves and simmer at very low heat.
  2. When the water has reduced to half add the mint leaves and continue simmering at very low heat until the water has reduced to a cup. Remove from the stove and allow to cool down for two minutes.
  3. Remove leaves. Add 1 teaspoon of lime juice and honey. Stir. Serve hot.

Lime leaves you'll probably need from an actual tree. I don't think it is sold anywhere. Mint is easy, any mid-sized supermarket should carry them, as well as limes (use lemon if you don't find limes).
