Article The basic kitchen


Cooking shouldn't require a lot of gadgets or expensive stuff. But there is still some basic equipment that we suggest you have in your kitchen. Feel free to add your suggestions and tips.

Strainers: Buy different sizes, preferably of stainless steel for long life.

Measuring cups and spoons: Or buy a measuring cup with many measures.

Blender: For shakes, sauces, mayo, etc.

Pots with tight fitting lids: Buy at least 3 sizes for rice, stews, soups.

Baking pans, preferably non-stick: Buy different sizes and depths.

A good set of knives: Buy a chef's knife, a bread cutter and a paring knife.

Plastic spatulas

Frying pans: Preferably non-stick.

Cutting boards: You will need at least two.

Skewers: Better if made of stainless steel.

Cookie cutters: Also perfect for decorating food.

Slotted spoon: Used to lift up food from liquid and skim soups.

Ladle: To serve soups and stews.

Steamer:
Great for low-calorie foods.

Baking sheet: Preferably non-stick for baking meat, cookies, etc.

Mortar:
To mash garlic, herbs and spices.

4-sided grater: Preferably made of stainless steel.

Springform pan: You'll need it for moist cakes and soufflés.

Colander: To drain pasta and vegetables.
