A better world through fabric

Compared to some fabric stashes I have seen around, mine is just a pitiful collection, but I really can’t resist the allure of a pretty fabric. A little bit of glue, some sewing material and pretty fabric can de-uglify almost anything. Almost anything (this is experience speaking).

About a month ago I bought a yard of the most tropical-looking fabric you can imagine, lots of green, acqua, turquoise hints of yellow and just a bit of black. I love this print. It is the Calypso St. Barth Island Blue print from Fabric.com. Best $7.98 I’ve spent lately.

My ugly, cheap, black mouse pad peeled off, and I wasn’t about to buy a new one. A bit of contact cement and just a small square of fabric and I get this happy-looking mousepad. It almost makes up for the tremendously crummy Mighty Mouse (I can’t forgive you this Apple).
“Hmm, this fabric is cute, let’s see what else I can do with it?”

Empty wall over my cutting table? Some bits of fabric and five  14” Wood Embroidery Hoops  also from Fabric.com at  $1.99 each and presto! A happy wall.

Planting something that needs a lot of water in a transparent glass recipient? Bad idea. There’s more green inside than on the plant.
Some more fabric and a piece of green raffia and I have the right kind of green on that pot. I covered the green soil with small seashells and it looks even better. Now nobody will notice my dying plant.
And here I stretched things a bit. My beloved canvas shoes were done, there was even a hole on the fabric. I love these shoes. They are very comfortable and fresh; the next best thing to walking barefoot. Actually, even better (have you tried walking barefoot on the pavement here?).
I really don’t want to get rid of them, but they are in no shape to go out in public.

There, better. Some Outdoor Mod Podge (it must have been invented for this) and about an eighth of a yard of fabric and my feet are singing. My daughter insists she must have shoes like that.

I still have  a small piece of that fabric left. I wonder what I’ll de-uglify next… Where’s the neighbor’s dog?

Wow! It seems there are no ends to your talent and creativity when it comes to using fabric! I also have old canvas shoes which I am loath to trash – I have to try this! (did you just cut the fabric to shape and adhere, folded over the top edges?)
